“Sweaters For Seniors” Benefits From Tightly Knit Friendships.

September 2nd, 2009

joanFor people like my friend and author Dr. Joan Curtis, supporting others comes as naturally as speaking Italian. No. Italian is not her first language, but something she studied long and hard until she was fluent. And that’s just the type of person Joan is. Ambitious. Dedicated. Focused. Which means, if you start a program like “Sweaters for Seniors,” it’s good to have somebody like Joan in your camp.

Thanks to Joan and her friends, I toted home bags and bags of “Sweaters For Seniors” from the 5 month old Northeast GA Business Women’s meet-up last week in Athens, GA. Which got me to thinking, “Just how could such a new group contribute so many sweaters, so quickly, without hardly the blink of an eye?”

As Joan explains, “Our group began only a short while ago with 10 people who wanted to network face-to-face as well as online.  Now, we have more than 100. As for ”Sweaters for Seniors,”  I wrote a note to the group explaining the program.  They responded with enthusiasm, bringing their sweaters to our last event.  Meanwhile some people, who didn’t hear about the program, seemed genuinely disappointed.  So, we intend to collect more next month.  We don’t want anyone who has sweaters to donate to be left out.”

Other friends who’ve donated sweaters include Carol Whiteley. Carol is a professional singer, with an M.ed in Special Education, two children, three grandchildren and is getting ready to start coursework again towards a Masters in Community Counseling. Thanks Carol for your drop at Chick-Fil-A right before the deadline!

Dayna Gorman Nelson, a college friend and runner extraordinaire from Colorado Springs, CO has boxed up several of her sweaters and is sending them to our office via U.S. Postal. Thanks Dayna!

Also, thanks to Damon Ladd-Thomas who made a drop at the Hway 124 Chick-Fil-A. This, right after he signed up to run for mayor in Grayson, GA. As Damon explains, “Tatyana Kravchuk decided which of his sweaters– including some she had knitted him–would be given away. And now, I have very few sweaters left in my closet!” Thanks Damon and Taty! (Maybe it’s time to hit the Gap.)
